1. Animal: Morpho butterfly
- The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with a wingspan that can reach up to 20cm.
- Only the male butterflies are blue, the females are generally not blue at all and tend to have have wings exhibiting various shades of brown, yellow and black.
- The entire life cycle of the Morpho butterfly, from egg to death, is approximately 115 days.
- Around 80 Morpho Butterfly species brighten tropical habitats, from Mexico all the way south to Paraguay.
2. Why they are endangered?
Blue morphos are not directly endangered, but they are still severely threatened by deforestation of tropical forests and habitat fragmentation. Humans provide a direct threat to this spectacular creature because their beauty attracts artists and collectors from all over the globe who wish to capture and display them.
